The possibilities with crochet are endless. I have always thought that if you can imagine it you can probably crochet it! That’s exactly what Pony McTate has achieved with her new book ‘Crochet A-B-Sea’ which I have had the pleasure of reading and help in the testing process.
Pony is a rock star crochet designer, her unmistakable style and creativity blow me away! When she first mentioned the idea of this book on her Instagram account I loved it and couldn’t wait to see it come together – it didn’t disappoint!
Crochet A-B-Sea – an extraordinary underwater alphabet. Pony has designed 26 sea creature squares using clever crochet stitches and techniques. She has not gone with your everyday, well known sea creatures however. In her book you will find patterns to make Electric Eels, Narwhals, Vampire Squids and Axolotl to name just a few. It’s hard to choose a favourite (in fact I have more than one!) but I decided that the little Porcupine Puffer looked adorable and loved hooking him up as part of Pony’s test team.
Each square is made in the same way with a simple circle which is squared off in the last few rounds. This creates the base onto which you attach your creature. I made my little Puffer using DMC Natura cotton and a 3.5mm crochet hook. The pattern was written clearly and Pony has included superb step by step photos to help with any tricky sections.
As well as the blanket pictured on the front cover you are given a few other ideas of how to use your squares in different configurations. There are also a few ideas of how to use the creatures on their own – one of my favourites is using kelp and tube fish with your gift wrapping!
I love this book. It’s clearly written with amazing photos and the idea behind it is inspired. If you’re looking for a quirky crochet project or like me you have children that love underwater creatures then you should definitely give it a go.
