Heart Granny Squares

A while ago I was playing around with granny square variations and I made these pretty heart squares. I made 9 in total and they became the front of a cushion cover that I sold in my Etsy shop.

The design is simple but effective and can be made using any yarn in any colours. I used aran weight cotton yarn to make these and decided on a two-tone heart with white surround.

I have written up the pattern for you to make your own…

Heart Granny Square Pattern

What you’ll need:

  • 3 colours of aran weight cotton yarn
  • 4mm crochet hook
  • scissors
  • darning needle

Abbreviations:

  • ch – Chain
  • st – Stitch
  • tr – Treble Crochet (US Double Crochet)

Pattern is written in UK terms. Beginning chain always counts as first stitch (unless otherwise stated). You are making a basic granny square but changing colours as you go to create the heart design.

——————–

Using central colour (A) make a magic circle

Round 1 – (working into the magic circle) ch3, 2tr, *ch1, 3tr, repeat from * twice more, ch1 then ss to top of ch3, fasten off.

Round 2 – (Using colour B) join yarn in any ch1 space with a ss, ch3 (2tr, ch1, 3tr) into same space, (3tr, ch1, 3tr) into the 3 remaining ch1 spaces, ss to top of ch3.

Round 3 – ss along to corner space, ch3 (2tr, ch1, 3tr) into same space, 3tr in next space (change to colour C at the end of the 3rd tr), (3tr, ch1, 3tr) in corner space (change to colour B at the end of last tr), 3tr in next space (change to colour C at the end of the 3rd tr), (3tr, ch1, 3tr) in corner space (change back to colour B at the end of last tr), 3tr in next space, (3tr, ch1, 3tr) in next corner space (change to colour C at the end of last tr), 3tr in next space, ss to top of ch3.

TIP – When crocheting round 4 try to crochet over as many of the ends from round 3 as possible, this will minimise the amount of ends to sew in.

Round 4 – ch3, *(3tr, ch1, 3tr) in corner space, 3tr in next 2 spaces, repeat from * twice, (3tr, ch1, 3tr) in last corner space, 3tr in next space, 2tr in last space, ss to top of ch3.

Round 5 – ch3, 2tr in same space, *(3tr, ch1, 3tr) in corner space, 3tr in next 3 spaces, repeat from * twice, (3tr, ch1, 3tr) in last corner space, 3tr in next 2 spaces, ss to top of ch3, fasten off and sew in ends.

Block the square if necessary.
