I recently visited Yarndale (a yarn festival set in the Yorkshire Dales) and purchased this amazing Elisa yarn from WoolyMahoosive – a specialist in extremely chunky yarn and supplies. It is a 200g skein (90 meters), 100% wool and classified as ‘Super Bulky’ calling for a 15-20mm crochet hook.
When I bought it I had imagined making a big squishy cowl but in reality it was a bit too itchy to wear next to the skin so I decided to make something for my home.
At first I thought about a cushion cover but as I had no spare cushion pads and was feeling very impatient I decided to make a plant pot! I couldn’t be more happy with the result! Such an easy make but the yarn is a dream to work with and I absolutely love the chunky look and stitch definition.

What you’ll need…
Approx 150g of ‘Super Bulky/Chunky’ yarn (I used Elisa in shade 67 from WoolyMahoosive) 12mm hook Stitch marker Scissors Darning needle
Abbreviations…
dc – Double Crochet (US Single Crochet) htr – Half Treble Crochet (US Half Double Crochet) blo – Back Loop Only flo – Front Loop Only
Pattern is written in UK terms, working in continuous rounds. Using a 12mm hook gives the finished plant pot a rigid feel. Pattern to fit pot with a 12cm diameter.
Work 6dcs into a magic loop (6)
Round 1 – 2htr into each stitch to end (12)
Round 2 – *1htr into next stitch, 2htr into next stitch, repeat from * to end (18)
Round 3 – *1htr into next 2 stitches, 2htr into next stitch, repeat from * to end (24)
Round 4 – *1htr into next 3 stitches, 2htr into next stitch, repeat from * to end (30)
Round 5 – htr in blo of each stitch to end (30)
Round 6 – htr in each stitch to end (30)
Round 7 – 12 repeat Round 6
Round 13 – htr in flo of each stitch to end (30)
Round 14 – htr in each stitch to end. Fasten off and bend last 2 rounds over to overlap pot.
If you want to make a different size pot add or remove rounds before the blo round to adjust the width and then again before the flo round to adjust the height.
Tip – I placed a small plastic bowl in the bottom of my chunky plant pot to keep the damp bottom of the plastic plant pot from touching the yarn.
